What salt wind does to a garden
Salt spray desiccates soft new growth, which is why coastal hedges here often look brown on the seaward face and green on the sheltered side. Trimming that seaward face hard makes it worse — you're removing the outer layer that's protecting everything behind it. We trim windward faces lightly and take more off the sheltered side to keep the shape.
For lawns, kikuyu handles this environment far better than fine fescue. It tolerates salt, recovers from wind burn through its runners, and copes with the sandy, free-draining soils toward the beach ends that dry out fast in February.
When we're planting on the peninsula we stay with proven coastal species — pōhutukawa, flax, muehlenbeckia, olearia, coprosma and libertia. They're not the only things that will survive here, but they're the ones that will still look good in five years without constant replacement.
