From $60
per tree, depending on size, species and access

Trees on a suburban section need managing, not just cutting. Branches over a roof drop debris into gutters, a dense crown starves the lawn beneath it of light, and deadwood over a driveway is a genuine hazard in an Auckland westerly.

Greensward NZ handles the tree work that sits between a hedge trimmer and a full arborist crane job — crown lifting, thinning, reductions, deadwooding and removal of small trees.

What's included

  • Crown lifting to clear roofs, paths, driveways and fences
  • Crown thinning to let light onto the lawn and garden below
  • Deadwood removal and storm damage tidy-up
  • Fruit tree pruning for shape and cropping
  • Small tree and stump-height removal
  • Chipping and removal of all arisings

Pruning cuts that don't damage the tree

Where a cut is made decides whether a tree seals over cleanly or rots from the wound. We cut back to the branch collar — the swollen ring at the base of a limb — and never leave stubs, which die back and become an entry point for decay.

Flush cuts, the other common mistake, remove the collar itself and take away the tissue the tree uses to seal. Both look tidy on the day. Both cause problems five years later.

For anything over about 50mm we use a three-cut method so the limb doesn't tear bark down the trunk as it falls.

Protected trees and council rules

Under the Auckland Unitary Plan, some trees are protected — scheduled notable trees, trees in Significant Ecological Areas, and trees on sites with specific overlays. Work on a protected tree without consent can carry a substantial fine.

If there's any doubt about a tree's status, we check the Auckland Council GeoMaps property viewer before quoting and tell you what we find. If consent is needed, we'll say so rather than quietly cutting.

What we don't do

We don't top trees. Topping — cutting a tree back to bare stubs to reduce height — produces weakly attached regrowth that's more likely to fail in wind than the original limb, and it permanently disfigures the tree. If a tree is genuinely the wrong size for the site, removal and replanting is the honest answer.

We also don't take on large removals over structures or power lines. Those need a full arborist crew with rigging and traffic management, and we'll point you to one rather than have a go.

Tree Trimming — common questions

How much does tree trimming cost in Auckland?

Tree work with Greensward NZ starts from $60 per tree. The price depends on the size and species of the tree, how much needs to come off, and access — a tree at the back of a section with no gate access takes considerably longer than one on a front lawn.

Do I need council consent to trim a tree in Auckland?

Most trees on private residential land can be trimmed without consent, but trees that are scheduled as notable, sit within a Significant Ecological Area, or fall under specific Unitary Plan overlays are protected. We check Auckland Council GeoMaps before quoting and will tell you if consent is required.

Can you remove a tree completely?

We remove small to medium trees where there's safe felling or sectional dismantling room. Large removals over houses, sheds or power lines need a full arborist crew with rigging and traffic management — we'll refer you rather than take on work beyond our gear.

When is the best time to prune fruit trees in Auckland?

Pip fruit such as apples and pears are pruned in winter while dormant. Stone fruit — plums, peaches, apricots — are better pruned in late summer after harvest, because winter pruning in Auckland's damp conditions leaves them open to silver leaf infection.
